A 25-year-old private bank employee died after allegedly falling into a pit dug by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) on Joginder Singh Marg in west Delhi’s Janakpuri while riding his motorcycle late Thursday night, police said on Friday.

According to the police, the body of the victim and his motorcycle were found inside the nearly 20-foot-deep pit on Friday morning. A case has been registered under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. Joint Commissioner of Police (Western Range) Jatin Narwal said the police control room received a call at around 8:03am about a man and a motorcycle lying in a pit on Joginder Singh Marg, following which the fire department was alerted.

Rescue operations were carried out, and both the man and the motorcycle were pulled out of the pit by around 8:30am. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The deceased was identified as Kamal Dhayani, a resident of Vikaspuri in west Delhi, who worked with a private bank in Rohini, Narwal said.

Police further stated that Dhayani’s family had approached the Vikaspuri police station at around 12:30am on Friday after he failed to return home and stopped responding to phone calls. The family informed the police that he was last in touch with them around 11:30pm and was on his way home on his motorcycle. They later also contacted the Janakpuri police station.

“The Janakpuri police traced Dhayani’s mobile phone location, which showed near the Janakpuri district centre. Head constable Ramkesh, along with the victim’s brother, searched for him until early morning, but he could not be located. His body was subsequently found in the pit later in the morning,” Narwal added.

Meanwhile, the Delhi government has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
