In a statement posted on X, the police said that after examining several leads, they found that the claims were being amplified to create unnecessary panic for monetary gains. The police warned that strict action would be taken against those responsible for spreading fear through misinformation.
“After following a few leads, we discovered that the hype around the surge in missing girls in Delhi is being pushed through paid promotion. Creating panic for monetary gains will not be tolerated, and strict action will be taken against such individuals,” the Delhi Police said.
Meanwhile, social media speculation suggested that the viral claims were linked to the promotion of actor Rani Mukerji’s upcoming film Mardaani 3. However, official data cited by PTI paints a broader picture. According to Delhi Police records, a total of 807 people were reported missing in the capital between January 1 and January 15, averaging around 54 cases per day. Of these, 509 were women and girls, while 298 were men.
The police reiterated the need for responsible reporting and urged the public to rely on verified information rather than viral claims circulating on social media.
